This is a weekly feature, where I get to go all fannish about two randomly-picked favvies (which may not actually be favorites, but got a rating of 3 or higher) that I would recommend to friends! So, here are this week's two picks:
Title: Masque of the Red Death
Author: Bethany Griffin
Genre: classic retelling/steampunk
Part of a Series: Yes
Rating: 3 out of 5
Who'll Like It: Mostly a girl read for ages fifteen and up, this is a great pick for fans of less historical and more futuristic steampunk and who like strong female protagonists. Also perfect for fans of two-book series.
Why I Like It:
My expectations were rather low when I first picked this book up, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that I liked the protagonist and the two guys (though Will was my favorite). The world is interesting and I like the spin the Author puts on Edgar Allen Poe's classic short story. It was just a really fun weekend read.

Title: Princess Academy
Author: Shannon Hale
Genre: adventure
Part of a Series: Yes
Rating: 4 out of 5
Who'll Like It: Girl-read, appropriate for any age. Though a Middle Grade read, this is one that a lot of teens will also find highly enjoyable, as well as adults. While having some slight fantasy elements, it is very slight, so Readers who are less enthusiastic about magic will like this book.
Why I Like It:
I love fairytale retellings and fairytale-like stories. This isn't a fairytale retelling, but it has the same feel. While I don't mind fantasy, I'm not a huge fan of it, so I liked how magical and whimsical and other-worldly this book felt without it being totally steeped in magic. I also just loved the world, the concept, the characters, and the writing. It is an awesome book.
Masque of the Red Death is such a good book! Great recommendation. :)
ReplyDeleteHave you read its sequel yet - DANCE OF THE RED DEATH? Not quite as good as MASQUE OF THE RED DEATH (in my opinion), but it was still enjoyable.
