Waiting on Wednesday #77 + WWW Wednesday #47

Waiting on Wednesday is hosted by Breaking the Spine.
It's a weekly meme about upcoming books we're excited about!

A Darker Shade of Magic
by V. E. Schwab
(Darker Shade #1)
Publication Date: February 24, 2015

From Goodreads:

Kell is one of the last Travelers - rare magicians who choose a parallel universe to visit.

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.

Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they'll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure.'

But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive - trickier than they hoped.

Why I'm Excited

- It's a new V. E. Schwab book!
- It's about parallel universes!
- LOOK AT THIS DESCRIPTION! DOESN'T THAT SOUND FREAKING AWESOME?!

Dove Arising
by Karen Bao
(Dove Chronicles #1)
Publication Date: February 24, 2015

From Goodreads:

Phaet Theta has lived her whole life in a colony on the Moon. She's barely spoken since her father died in an accident nine years ago. She cultivates the plants in Greenhouse 22, lets her best friend talk for her, and stays off the government's radar.

Then her mother is arrested.

The only way to save her younger siblings from the degrading Shelter is by enlisting in the Militia, the faceless army that polices the Lunar bases and protects them from attacks by desperate Earth-dwellers. Training is brutal, but it's where Phaet forms an uneasy but meaningful alliance with the preternaturally accomplished Wes, a fellow outsider.

Rank high, save her siblings, free her mom: that's the plan. Until Phae's logically ordered world begins to crumble. . . .

Why I'm Excited

- I discovered recently that I love books that take place on the moon.

What are you currently reading?

Thursdays at Castle Glower have never been spent so far from home. After the Castle transports Princess Celie, Prince Lulath, Pogue, and Celie's siblings, Rolf and Lilah, to an unknown land, they find themselves in the sleeping ruins of the Castle, in a world full of wild griffins and scheming wizards.

Without the Castle to guide her, Celie is unsure whom to trust - especially when two strange wizards claim to be the Castle's original keepers. She and the others must set out into the unknown if they hope to awaken the Castle and return home. As they learn the story of the Castle's origins, a truth fraught with secrets is revealed. But Celie knows the Castle best of all, and with the help of her pet griffin, Rufus, and her motley crew, she must find a way to save the Castle and get them all home safe and sound.

I'm further along! And still very much enjoying it! I've just been super busy and distracted. But I am really liking it! Full of adventure and awesomeness and answers!

What have you recently read?

Min Green and Ed Slaterton are breaking up, so Min is writing Ed a letter and giving him a box. Inside the box is why they broke up. Two bottle caps, a movie ticket, a folded note, a box of matches, a protractor, books, a toy truck, a pair of ugly earrings, a comb from a motel room, and every other item collected over the course of a giddy, intimate, heartbreaking relationship. Item after item is illustrated and accounted for, and then the box, like a girlfriend, will be dumped.

I gave this book 2 out of 5 strawberries. I loved the narration style, I even cared about some of the characters. But it left me wondering, What was the point? And sometimes the narration was too much like stream-of-consciousness and I couldn't follow it.

What do you plan on reading next?

Fans of The Lunar Chronicles know Queen LEvana is a ruler who uses her "glamour" to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story - a story that has never been told. . . .until now.

Can we first take a moment to appreciate this wonderful gif? Awesome! Okay, so technically I should be reading The House of the Scorpion next, but Fairest is so short and I can't put it off any longer. There.

    1. If you haven't ever read Schwab's books before, I would start with THE ARCHIVED, then try VICIOUS. Either people love her books or don't care for them at all.
